无籽西瓜是三倍体，由于三倍体细胞在进行减数分裂时出现染色体紊乱的情况，所以三倍体西瓜不能形成种子。其亲本是二倍体西瓜和四倍体。普通西瓜为二倍体植物，即体内有2组染色体（2N=22），用秋水仙素处理其幼苗，令二倍体西瓜植株细胞染色体成为4倍体（4N=44），这种4倍体西瓜能正常开花结果，种子能正常萌发成长。
