牡蛎的别名。如:蚝蛎(牡蛎);生蚝(粤语地区)、蚵仔(闽南语地区);蚝壳(指牡蛎;牡蛎的外壳);蚝浦(产牡蛎的浅海)。 在中医药方中的“牡蛎”,指的是牡蛎壳。 在动物分类中属于瓣鳃纲,牡蛎科,拉丁文:Ostrea,繁体字写作:蠔。在江浙以北至渤海一带的沿海地区,人们一般都称之为:牡蛎或海蛎子;在福建沿海及台湾地区的人们称之为:蚵仔;而在两广及海南等南海水域的人们都称之蚝。蚝(Oyster)蚝演化於侏罗纪,在温暖的南方海域,岛屿周围的海床及岩石上制造、形成礁状物。
