Unite said the eight companies, which have construction contracts with the two refineries, plan to dismissemployees before re-engaging them on new contracts.
The archdiocese had argued prior to trial that Dias was a ministerial employee and that the Supreme Court has said religious groups can dismiss those employees without government interference.
And since managers have limited authority to dismiss underperforming employees, and move people around (owing to government hiring rules and union restrictions), the cuts could fall most heavily on the newest hires.
In the second decade of the 21st century, companies can no longer afford to dismiss innovative ideas from anyone, least of all their most connected employees and leaders.
