During the 11-day duration of the 37th International Traditional Crafts Show, held from 22 October to 7 November at the Parque Bicentenario in Santiago de Chile, exhibits included the eight works that have been awarded the Seal of Excellence, a national distinction that seeks to highlight quality in handicrafts, based on the criteria of excellence, authenticity, innovation, respect for the environment, and market potential.

The meeting, held at Rhodes University, was a follow-up to a study undertaken last year by UNESCO to map the media training landscape across the continent and to assess potential excellence according to three broad criteria areas.

Immediately after the 2nd UNESCO workshop, a working meeting, Towards Excellence in Journalism Education, will bring together Potential Centres of Excellence and Reference in Journalism Training in Africa to take stock of the progress made in three broad criteria areas of curriculum and institutional capacity, professional and public service, external links and recognition, and development plan, strategy and potential.
