Its research was led by a team from UniversityCollegeCork (UCC) but involved academics from five institutions, including Queens University in Belfast (QUB).
Following the Welsh discovery, marine ecologists at Swansea University and UniversityCollegeCork used satellite-tracking systems to follow 10 leatherbacks from their nesting sites in the tropics.
"We thought initially that the shoe and other objects were about 600-700 years old because they were in such good condition, " said co-author Dr Ron Pinhasi from UniversityCollegeCork in Ireland.
