As her performances grew in popularity, musical accompaniment was added, first with a drum and then the flute and three-stringed banjo-like shamisen.

Along with the shamisen and the flute, geisha also learned to play a ko-tsuzumi, a small, hourglass-shaped shoulder drum, and a large floor taiko (drum).
