Richard Florida, an expert on urban planning at the University of Toronto, wrote in the Atlantic last year that the economy "no longer revolves around simply making and moving things."

Beach books also may have been a factor. Florida was the only state with three cities on the list: Miami, Orlando and University of Florida's home, Gainesville.
