Oresteia
最早的复仇悲剧可以追溯到古希腊悲剧作家埃斯库勒斯的三部曲《俄瑞斯忒斯》(Oresteia),但是对英国伊丽莎白时期的复仇悲剧影响最大的是古罗马作家塞内加,他的主要悲剧于1559~1581年间被翻译成英语。

俄瑞斯忒斯是希腊神话中的人物，古希腊远征特洛伊的统帅阿伽门农的儿子。特洛伊战争结束后，阿伽门农回国统治，被妻子克吕泰涅斯特拉及其情人埃吉斯托斯杀死。俄瑞斯忒斯被母亲克吕泰涅斯特拉驱逐，俄瑞斯忒斯长大后替父报仇，杀掉了克吕泰涅斯特拉和埃吉斯托斯，成为了一代英雄。
