Retroflex suffixation of place names is a very common phenomenon in Beijing.

This thesis analyses the synchronic and diachronic features of Peiking place names in a linguistic perspective, as well as the relationship between Peiking place names and regional culture.

Jo Kim, a linguist at the unit, said, "For the Beijing Olympics we have made 2 special lists, one of Chinese gold medal hopefuls and another list of place names and stadia."
