一个叶柄上所生叶片的数目，在各种植物中是不相同的，一般有两种情况：单叶与复叶。在一个叶柄上只生有一个叶片的叶，称为单叶( simple leaf)，如厚朴、女贞、枇杷等；在一个叶柄上生有两个或两个以上叶片的叶，称为复叶( compound leaf)。从来源上看，复叶是由单叶的叶片分裂而形成，即当叶裂片深达主脉或叶基，并具有小叶柄时，便形成了复叶。
