参谋部
总参谋部或称参谋本部，为现代军队中提供军事情报、后勤、计划与人事的组织机构。十八世纪晚期以前，上述功能全部由军队统帅管理，但法国大革命后出现征兵制，大量军队的管理使统帅的职责十分沉重。在1795年，路易斯·亚历山大·贝尔蒂埃将军率先创立了参谋系统。一年后，拿破仑接管改制军队。从此以后，总参谋部成为法军的正式组织，并随拿破仑战争走遍欧洲。
