In this paper the characteristics of the high frequency gas discharge in the magnetic quadrupole field are investigated.

We describe an exact quadrupole field with square cross-section in which the boundary potential varies linearly with position.

Some quantitative relations are given, and experimental evidence is provided for the use of the magnetic quadrupole field in high frequency ion source.
