国石通常是一个国家人们喜爱的或具有优异特性和重要价值，或是在该国出产和加工方面具有物色的宝石或玉石，例如南非的钻石和斯里兰卡的猫眼石就被命名为国石。同许多国家已经选定命名本国的国花和国鸟一样，世界上已有近40个国家有了自己的国石。遗憾的是中国历史上素来没有评选国石的习俗。
