This study aimed to evaluate the value of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW) and erythrocyte fragility in the diagnosis of neonatal thalassemia.

Wang Yijie, a 4 year old girl, was diagnosed with thalassemia major when she was just four months old.

Conclusion The simple and quick blood test, in particular, MCV, RDW of iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia clinical identification, have some diagnostic value, should be applied.
