The safety and rescue equipment is used in tall structures in particular, such as in windmills, on drilling platforms and in antenna masts.

Most television stations will use backup antennas during the transition while their old analogue ones are taken down from their towers and replaced with new digital masts.

A mobile phone, souped-up with such an antenna, can talk to a network tower that is dozens of kilometres beyond its normal range (about 5km, or 3 miles).
