Microsoft started working on their own cloud platform only a few months before Amazon announced EC2.

Since announcing their cloud-computing platform Azure last year, Microsoft has made it clear they intend to break into the large-scale hosting market as well.

Microsoft’s fear, by contrast, has been that computing as a whole might move from the operating system as a platform for applications to the web (or “cloud”).
