The Japanese authorities have announced that radiation levels surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are increasing to potentially harmful levels.

Japan's nuclear crisis is spiking demand in the U.S. and a few other places for a cheap drug that can protect against one type of radiation damage -even though the risk is only in Japan.

The risk is thought to be low that radiation released in Japan will reach the US West Coast at dangerous levels.
