其实没有“昨日黄花”这个词，都是“明日黄花”的误用！“明日黄花”语出苏东坡的一首诗《九日次韵王巩》中的“相逢不用忙归去，明日黄花蝶也愁。”是指重阳过后菊花逐渐枯萎，后多比喻已失去新闻价值的报道或已失去应时作用的事物。苏轼还有首词也提到“明日黄花”，《南乡子．重九涵辉楼呈徐君猷》词中写道：“万事到头都是梦，休休，明日黄花蝶也愁。”
