Their new microscope replaces the magnetic tip with a diamond that has a defect in its crystal structure.

The researchers analysed the sizes and structures of ash particles using a variety of techniques, such as atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Finally, they photographed the nanostructures using an electron microscope to confirm they had achieved the desired shapes.
