This paper investigates the approach to estimate the maximum detection range of an infrared point_target against sky background based on the minimum resolved contrast(MRC)criteria.

Theoretical analyses and applications all show that the geometric distance least square method is also a good and effective parameter estimation method.

The bit error probability is estimated by the minimum average Euclidean distance. Through simulation, it is shown that the estimation is usually very accurate at high signal-to-noise ratio.
