Asian firms that make cheap cars and washing machines for Asia's emerging middle class, such as Tata, Hyundai and Haier, will make inroads into Western markets.

Chinese appliance giant Haier will buy Panasonic's Sanyo Electric washing machine and refrigerator units in Japan and Southeast Asia.

It also tweaked the machines to produce less noise and keep rats out — two factors rural consumers said were important to them.
