After the death of his father King George V and the scandalous abdication of King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), Bertie is suddenly crowned King George VI of England.

George VI reluctantly takes the throne of England when his brother abdicates in 1936. The unprepared king turns to a speech therapist to help overcome his stutter and the two forge a friendship.
