In 1712 he built his atmospheric steam engine, a precursor of James Watt's engine.

By 1800, Watt's version was outselling its predecessor, and they were shipping it across the world.

In the late 1700s James Watt designed an efficient and commercially viable steam engine that was soon applied to a variety of industrial uses as it became cheaper to use.
