无色针状结晶。易潮解。熔点时分解放出硫化氢。易溶于水和醇。水溶液呈强碱性。遇酸反应生成硫化氢。味苦。染料工业用于合成有机中间体和制备硫化染料的助剂，制革工业用于生皮的脱毛及鞣革，化肥工业用于脱去活性炭脱硫剂中的单体硫，采矿工业大量用于铜矿选矿，人造纤维生产中用于亚硫酸染色等，是制造硫化铵及农药乙硫醇半成品的原料，还用于废水处理等。由硫化碱或烧碱溶液吸收硫化氢气体而得。
