The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has intervened in the epic struggle between financial companies and the hedge funds that are short-selling their shares.

Morningstar compared the average performance of long-short mutual funds with that of a portfolio of stocks and bonds.

But unlike standard funds they can be bought and sold throughout the trading day, so investors can make, or reverse, broad bets quickly, without having to buy dozens of stocks separately.
