Google WebM project is designed to provide an open source video format that can be used for video delivery over the web.

The paper makes a detailed comparison between several often used video file formats so that we can get a comprehensive knowledge of video files and use them better.

H.264 is currently the most popular format. It is free for now but could become a paid offering in the future.
