经过12年的施工，1983年1月27日，南起青森县今别町滨名，北至北海道知内町汤里，世界上最长的海底隧道—青函隧道的先导坑道终于打通了。1988年3月13日，青函隧道正式通车，从而结束了日本本州与北海道之间只靠海上运输的历史。
