《香火》的故事发生在西北某农村。一辈子务农的老赵，正在为儿子的婚事发愁，从外乡买来一个姑娘准备给儿子完婚，可是买儿媳的钱还未借够人就已经送来了。当晚，儿子打工的矿上传来儿子出矿难的噩耗，一家人陷入巨大的悲痛和无助中，矿上出了3万元就算私了了这起事故。老赵拿着儿子这3万元的“买命钱”陷入深深的沉思，而就在此时，人贩老黄又来要买儿媳的钱。两人发生争执。懦弱的老赵横不过人贩，钱被拿走，老赵几近崩溃。为了能续上赵家的香火，他四处筹钱，吃了多少闭门羹，遭了多少冷眼，到头来还是落得个人财两空。老赵不甘心这一切，自家不能断了香火，于是他扑向了儿媳……
