客运索道是指用于运送旅客的“索道”。有往复式索道和循环式索道两类。前者在线路支架两侧的承载索上各挂一个载客车厢，由一条或两条牵引索牵引沿线路往复运行；后者在线路支架两侧的钢丝绳上，等间距各挂若干个载客车厢或吊椅，由驱动机带动钢丝绳循环运行。中国黄山的登山索道是亚洲最长的空中客运索道；意大利米兰市的客运索道建在市中心，被誉为“空中公共汽车”；委内瑞拉安第斯山脉间的埃斯佩霍空中索道，海拔高达4760m，是世界上最高的客运索道。
