血红细胞又称红血球或红血细胞或红细胞，是血液中最多的一种血细胞。红细胞中含有血红蛋白，因而使血液呈红色。血红蛋白能和空气中的氧结合，因此红细胞能通过血红蛋白将吸入肺泡中的氧运送给组织，而组织中新陈代谢产生的二氧化碳也通过红细胞运到肺部并被排出体外。血红蛋白更易和一氧化碳相合，当空气中一氧化碳和含量增高时，可引起一氧化碳中毒。
