地球同步轨道（geosynchronous orbit）运行周期等于地球自转周期(23小时56分4秒)的顺行人造地球卫星轨道。不考虑轨道摄动时，在地球同步轨道上运行的卫星每天相同时刻经过地球上相同地点的上空。对地面观侧者而言，每天相同时刻卫星出现在相同的方向上。倾角为0的圆形地球同步轨道，称为地球静止卫星轨道。
显然把这些所需的器材直接送到离地三万五千八百公里之 地球同步轨道 （ geosynchronous orbit ）是不可能的。因此需要分段输送，再予以组合。
