In late September, the company had announced plans for a restructuring program to reduce costs, including a reductioninforce to around 1, 000 by early next year from 1, 275.
In an interview with Forbes this afternoon, CFO George Davis noted that the large charge in the latest quarter reflects the restructuring program announced in October, which includes a reductioninforce of 900 to 1, 300 positions, or 6%-9% of the global workforce.
We know that if the entire sequester came out of FDA manpower, it would require a reductioninforce of between 1000 and 1400 people (probably a combination of not filling vacancies, which is a really bad way to decide priorities, and lay-offs).
